As Tina Says, "Oregon or Bust"

A few nights before family camp, my sister-in-law called and said they would be going to Oregon that weekend to visit my aunt and to look through my grandmother's things. In a sense, it was a chance to say goodbye to Grandma since she hadn't had a service of any kind. By the following day, Doug and I had it all squared away that we would meet up with them. That left two-and-a-half days to pack for family camp and for an unexpected road trip to Port Orford, Oregon.

We left early Saturday morning before family camp finished hoping to make it to my grandma's house at dinner time or shortly after. We made lots of stops for the sake of the kids and also so I could nurse Andrew. We had a great time traveling and realized that it had been a while since we had taken a road trip.

After 13+ hours of travel, we made it in time for a late dinner. My Aunt Marie prepared enchiladas and Tina made Spanish rice. Here were some of the happy faces that greeted us:

Andrew meets his Uncle Dave

A happy reunion for the cousins -
Paul and the girls stayed up until about 1 am talking!

One thing we are really thankful for is how the kids always seem to pick up right where they left off and have a great time together. And it was fun to see an Arequipa shirt on Sammy.

My uncle is a fisherman by trade and always takes the boys and men on fun adventures when we visit. This time crab season was already over as far as professional licensing goes, but he was able to take the bigger boys crabbing just for fun. Doug and our kids headed to the dock to watch the boys catch crabs. Alyssa scared everybody by climbing up on the wall overlooking the ocean and Philip got pinched by a crab. I was told by the girls that he was very brave about it.

Of course, the time to say goodbye to my brother and his family came. We took lots of pictures, but I won't bore you with all of them:

After Dave and Tina and the boys left, we stayed a few more days to go through my grandma's belongings, to visit with my aunt and uncle, and also to spend some time vacationing. Seeing my aunt and uncle and vacationing were an unexpected delight for the summer.

One day we headed to the walk-in-safari just north of Port Orford. Annalisa wasn't quite as brave as the last time we were there, but Alyssa got comfortable enough to pet quite a few of the animals.

There were lots of tears for me as we left, but I am glad that I was able to mourn over Grandma. We said goodbye to her house and all the belongings that represented her life and we headed out with a rental truck packed with some of her possessions. We took two days to make the trip home and we also stopped off at Multnomah Falls which was beautiful.

Great pix Anna! Is Alyssa petting a possum? YUK! Sorry, I realize that these are all God's creatures but, can't hang with any members of the rodent family. I know you had a pet rat. I don't even like the squirrels at the park - those nasty things get all close to you - I swear I thought one was going to jump in the stroller with Sammy one day. I am like, "Go away!" I probably should chill on the squirrel thing seeing as whenever Sammy sees a squirrel now he says, "Eweee, yuk squirrel, I don't 'yike'!" David says, "Don't teach him that!" Guess I probably shouldn't, ooops!

Okay so I lied, I do have one more comment to make. About the pic of David and Andrew - When I saw this I thought to myself, "Oh, Dave's going to have a fit you put a picture of him on your blog." He's not too keen on pictures of himself these days. But look at how cute it is! How can he protest?

Ha, Ha! I'm so glad you commented so much. Alyssa is petting a ferret and I realized in the picture you can see Annalisa at her bravest doing a slight pet.

As to Dave's picture - oh well. I know, I am such a caring sister! I do understand, I really hate pictures of myself these days. But like I said, oh well. I really like that picture of the two of them. I'm sure he will appreciate all of this;-)

Hey Anna,

It's fun to see those pictures Annalisa & Alyssa hanging out with Philip, Paul, and Sammy. They remind me of when I would get to have little reunions every few summers with my cousins who lived in Wisconsin, and just like your kids, every time we got together it was like no time had lapsed since we had last seen one another - an instant bond.

I like how in that one picture with the ferret it looks like Annalisa is about to pet Alyssa's hand. Like she's thinking - maybe no one will notice if I just pet my sister's hand instead of this animal. =)
